What is Post-Op MLD and How Does It Help After Surgery?

If you're preparing for surgery — whether it's a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) , liposuction (lipo) , bbl (brazilian bum lift), breast augmentation, or a joint replacement; you've likely spent a lot of time researching the procedure itself. But have you thought about what happens after?

My name is Ali. At Lymf I specialise in post-operative MLD for clients across London and Essex. I work as a mobile therapist which means I come to you at home, so you never have to travel when you're recovering.

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

MLD is a specialist, light-touch massage technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system. Unlike regular massage, MLD uses very gentle, rhythmic movements, not deep tissue work, which can be harmful post-surgery.

What Happens to Your Lymphatic System After Surgery?

Surgery is a controlled trauma. When your surgeon makes incisions: blood vessels are cut, lymphatic vessels are disrupted, inflammation floods the area with fluid, and fibrosis can develop if fluid stays stagnant too long.

Your lymphatic system is responsible for clearing this excess fluid. But after surgery it can become overwhelmed. This is why many clients experience prolonged swelling, hard lumpy areas, seromas, and slower than expected healing.

How Does Post-Op MLD Help?

Reduces Swelling Faster

By gently redirecting fluid away from the surgical site and towards functioning lymph nodes, MLD accelerates the natural reduction of post-surgical edema. Clients often notice a visible reduction after just a few sessions.

Prevents Fibrosis and Seromas

Keeping fluid moving is the single most effective way to prevent fibrosis and seromas. MLD from the early stages of recovery dramatically reduces the likelihood of these complications.

Speeds Up Recovery

When your lymphatic system is working efficiently, your body can get on with healing. Clients who have regular MLD typically return to normal activities more quickly.

Enhances Your Final Results

MLD helps protect your surgical investment by reducing the risk of uneven contours, lumpy skin, and prolonged swelling. Clients who combine surgery with consistent MLD tend to be happier with their outcomes at 3, 6, and 12 months.

Which Surgeries Benefit From Post-Op MLD?

• Liposuction including Vaser Lipo (all areas of the body)

• Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)

• BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift)

• Breast augmentation, reduction, or lift

• Rhinoplasty

• Body contouring procedures

• Orthopaedic surgery (knee and hip replacements)

• C-section recovery

When Should You Start Post-Op MLD?

The sooner, the better — but always with your surgeon's approval. In most cases, MLD can begin within 24 to 72 hours after surgery. A typical course involves on average 15 sessions.

If you're already weeks or months post-surgery and haven't had MLD, it's not too late. i regularly work with clients who come to me well into their recovery.
